Welcome to my corner of the internet! I’m a software engineer with over 34 years of professional experience who has always enjoyed building things and taking them apart to understand how they work. I started writing code at age thirteen and began teaching programming to school teachers at fourteen - a passion for both creating and sharing knowledge that continues to drive me today.
Currently, I work as a Software Development Engineer III at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where I lead and develop open source projects for AWS Solutions in the Advertising and Marketing industry, and the Media & Entertainment industry. You can see my active contributions on GitHub where I maintain several AWS Solutions repositories.
Professional Journey
My design and engineering philosophy centers on delivering effective and elegant technical solutions in incremental cycles, allowing visionaries, users, technology, and business processes to grow together into a cohesive ecosystem.
AWS (2016-Present): Leading open source projects for AWS Solutions, building systems for Advertising and Media & Entertainment industries. My GitHub profile showcases active contributions to projects like Clickstream Analytics on AWS, Prebid Server deployments, and Amazon Marketing Cloud solutions.
IBM (2000-2016): Sixteen years across multiple divisions focusing on DevOps automation, Rational Software integrations for enterprise customers, and serving as an Eclipse Foundation committer on the Eclipse Process Framework (EPF) project, contributing to open source process authoring and configuration tools.
Early Career (1988-2000): Started with disaster recovery and data storage at StorageTek, moved through machine vision and manufacturing automation, eventually specializing in software engineering tools and UML pattern systems.
Patents
I am the inventor on three patents spanning different areas of technology innovation:
US11089076B1 - Automated detection of capacity for video streaming origin server (2021) - Amazon Technologies Inc. A system for automatically detecting and monitoring the capacity limits of video streaming origin servers to prevent service degradation.
US8973134B2 - Software vulnerability management and remediation systems
US5657079A - Monitor calibration and display systems
Technical Interests
My professional focus areas include distributed and cloud computing, security and automation, software reuse and code generation, and big data solutions.
Education & Continuous Learning
- Master of Science, Software Engineering - Regis University (2008-2012)
- Bachelor of Science, Information Technology - University of Phoenix (2003-2005)
- Professional Development - UCLA Extension (Engineering, Information Systems)
What You’ll Find Here
This site reflects my belief that contributing back to the industry and sharing knowledge is important for any practitioner. Here you’ll find DIY engineering projects, professional software development insights, and a historic archive of technology perspectives from 2005-2009.
Beyond the Screen
When I’m not building software or working on projects, I enjoy hiking, camping, gardening, and water activities like swimming, stand-up paddling, and occasional surfing. These activities provide balance and often spark new ideas that inform my technical work.
